JUMEX
My remaining time in Mexico City is slipping through my fingers like sand. While I am devastated to leave in only a matter of days, my impending departure has prompted me to do things around town that I have been putting off for years. [[MORE]] A couple of weeks ago I had a good friend visiting just to see museums and galleries. We did the usual Anthropology, Soumaya, Tamayo, Frida...

This comes a little late, but I am still recovering from celebrating my first Mother’s Day as a mom in San Miguel de Allende. Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there, including my own wonderful mother. I’m learning everyday how hard it is to be a mom, and it makes me realize that we all owe our own mothers a big THANK YOU! So thanks, mom. Now I will always remember to...

As we enter our last month of living in Mexico City, it occurs to me that some things that we’ve done many times over the last two and a half years we are now doing for the last time. There are things that I never posted about because I thought, “oh, there will always be next time.” We’ve been to lucha libre many times, enough that we know the characters and the routine....

My tiny bebé is already a 3 month old chunk! These newborn photos were taken when he was just under two weeks old and I don’t believe he was ever that small. At least I have photographic proof. If you are looking for great family photos in Mexico City check out our friend Martin, he is great with kids and his enthusiasm is infectious. Oh, and he takes fantastic photos.        We are 6...

México Lindo y Querido
We have been singing mariachi songs to bebé to get him to go to sleep, which he seems to like and also has helped me learn all the words to some classics that I have loved for a long time. “México Lindo y Querido” is one of the songs we sing and I came across this version by Playing for Change that made me all weepy. As we close out our tour here in Mexico I am having a hard time...

It’s Pascua all week in Mexico, so Happy Easter! Yesterday was our first Easter Sunday in Mexico, usually we travel back to the US to spend the holiday with family. This year, we mixed old and new traditions. [[MORE]] I put together my first Easter basket for bebé but was bummed out because I couldn’t find cascarones in time to put some in his basket. Babymoon Redux
I never got around to posting photos from our New Year’s trip to Tulum, mostly because it was only a few days after we returned that bebé was born. [note to self: next time around don’t cut it so close with the travel during pregnancy] Looking back, that trip was a dream. I was so sad as we drove off, knowing that I would go back but it would never be as carefree again.    ...

my funny valentine
1/2/3/4/5/6/7/8/9 When I was a kid my mom always went out of her way to give us little Valentine’s Day surprises - nothing fancy, just a few goodies that made the day special. That is probably why I don’t think of Valentine’s Day as a super romantic mushy holiday, but as a holiday to do something nice for friends and family. In that spirit, I thought I would round up...

Hi, there. Our Valentine’s Day baby surprised us a few weeks ago - turns out he wanted to be a New Year’s baby. Needless to say, we’ve been a little bit distracted over here. We’ve had family visiting and helping out with everything, which has been so nice. And now we are all on our own with no net, which is also sort of nice. We took a little jaunt to the pyramids...

I’m not going to lie - this first full week back to work after the holidays has not been easy. Add to that the fact that I am just getting bigger and slower every day, and I am not feeling the burst of energy I usually feel at the beginning of a new year. But I’m going to try and pick it up over the next few weeks, since they are likely my last productive weeks for a while…here...

A Night to Remember
A couple of weeks ago we went to see the Ballet Folklórico by Amalia Hernandez at the Castillo de Chapultepec. I had been buzzing with excitement about it on twitter and here on the blog, but in reality I had no idea what to expect. Well, I am happy to report that it was well worth all of my buzzing.   [[MORE]] First, it gave us a rare view of the city from the castle at night. The Castillo...

Last week I made my last visit to DC for a while. I have spent our last two years in Mexico traveling regularly to DC for work, but that is coming to an end as I am now grounded in Mexico until bebé arrives and will spend our last months in Mexico after bebé arrives on leave. As much as I am looking forward to ditching the travel schedule, I will miss my hometown. I felt lucky last week to see...

Día de Muertos Roundup
As everyone is packing up and heading to wherever they are headed for Thanksgiving, I thought I would post some final photos from our Día de Muertos excursions around Mexico City. Ofrenda
For the first time this year I put up an altar for Día de los Muertos. It’s pretty modest, but I think it is pretty good for my first time! I had tons of cempazúchil (marigolds) and pata de león (lion’s paw, I actually don’t know what these flowers are called in English) that I arranged on the altar and all over the apartment. I added a sugar skull, a giant pan de muerto,...

Shopping in Oaxaca
When we returned to Oaxaca this summer we told everyone we were going to see La Guelaguetza - and we were. We had tickets for the show and enjoyed it immensely. But to say that it was the reason for our trip was a little bit of a white lie. The real reason? I still had more shopping to do. Our first trip was a little overwhelming. Markets! Pueblos! Alebrijes! Where to start? We did a little bit...

HIERVE EL AGUA
Once upon a time, a long long time ago, we visited Oaxaca and took a half-day trip to Hierve el Agua. When I saw the rock formations in this video I knew I wanted to see them in person. What I didn’t know was the adventure we would have getting there. Don’t we look so happy and relaxed here? We rented a car in Oaxaca City, which was a comedy of errors in its own right, and headed...

Five Things
I was interested to see an article in the Washington Post this week on swimming with whale sharks all over the world. I was especially interested in this letter that talks about the different experiences one couple had in Cancun and Isla Holbox [albeit years apart]. Five Things
It’s been a sad week full of distressing news for diplomats around the world. No matter what your politics, religion or nationality, it is a scary thing to turn on the news to see embassies and international schools under attack. Fall Style
skull slippers / sweater / argan oil / leopard slippers / leather pants / ring I’ve been looking for something new to inspire my fall theme, but I keep coming back to my old fall favorites - leather and knits, skulls and gold. Fortunately, we have more than blurry underwater photos to remember our time in Holbox. I finally got around to downloading our real photos and at least half are just of the turquoise water. OAXACA Corazon de Mexico
Since we are creeping up on our next trip to Oaxaca, I figure I better get my pictures from our last trip posted already. A Weekend in DF
Last weekend we had a group of friends visit us in Mexico City and it was just. so. much. fun.  Of course a weekend is not nearly enough time to see Mexico City, but we did our best.  We climbed pyramids, rode a trajinera in Xochimilco, wandered around town, drank mezcal, saw Frida’s house, ate tlacoyos, and sat in cantinas.  We listened to Mariachis.  We laughed at old jokes.  We danced. ...

Monte Albán
Slowly but surely I am getting through my photos from our trip to Oaxaca.  We spent about half a day exploring the Zapotec ruins at Monte Albán.  I don’t think I have been as impressed with the scale of an archeological site in Mexico since I first visited Teotihuacan six years ago.  The two civilizations overlapped and interacted in the Terminal Formative period, making Monte Albán the...

A Call For Suggestions
I’m visiting Oaxaca [the city] for the first time two weeks from now and could not be more excited. Unfortunately, I haven’t had time to do much research on what we should see and do while we are there. A visit to Monte Albán is definitely on the list, but what else should we be sure not to miss? This post is long overdue, but I finally got around to downloading photos from the daytrip we took to Chichén Itzá during our holiday in Tulum earlier this year.
